Alcohol abuse can cause physical dependency – the body becomes dependant on alcohol. In alcohol dependency, when an individual reduces the quantity or abstains from drinking alcohol, physical withdrawal occurs. The withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol dependency vary from individual to individual, however, the symptoms are most often severe and can be life threatening.

Symptoms of withdrawal or reduced drinking can include:-

Heightened anxiety

Panic attacks

Psychosis

Suicidal thoughts

Raised blood pressure

Increased heart rate

Delirium Tremens

Seizure

Without medication, the withdrawal symptoms are at best extremely uncomfortable, so much so, that it is virtually impossible for most alcoholics to successfully complete a detox without relapsing part way through. At worst, a non medicated detox period can result in hospital admission and possible death. It is therefore essential that anyone wishing to withdraw from alcohol should be professionally medicated so that the withdrawal process is managed in a controlled and safe manner. If managed correctly, the detox period is usually relatively short (5 to 10 days), is tolerable, and the associated health risks are minimised.
